Protecting Young Lives ― One Car Seat at a Time

What is the safest location for my baby’s car seat? How can I best secure my young child for a safe ride?

These questions often aren’t properly answered before the installation of a car seat. In fact, the Washington, D.C.-based National Safety Kids Campaign reports that four out of five child safety seats are used incorrectly ― leading to a risk of unintentional injury from motor vehicle collisions.

Fortunately for parents in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, important questions related to car-seat safety can be easily addressed during Car Seat Safety Checks. The events are part of Texas Health Resources’ Child Automobile Safety Initiative (CASI), a critical component of Texas Health’s Community Health Improvement focus on infant health and mortality.

To date, more than 212 children have enjoyed a safe car ride with help from events at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. Of the 212 car seats evaluated during the safety initiative, 71 percent were identified as being used incorrectly. At the appointments, Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians are joined by members of the hospital’s neonatal units and Texas State Troopers for the one-on-one sessions with parents and caregivers.

“Every appointment has been filled since the very first Car Seat Fitting Event one year ago,” said newborn admission nurse Holly H. Roberts, R.N.C.-L.R.N., who coordinates the events. “I’m so proud to be part of the THD CASI team involved. All are heroes in the eyes of the families and communities served.”

Car Seat Fitting Events are held the first Saturday and third Friday of every month beginning at 9 a.m. in front of the Margot Perot Center for Women and Infants on the Texas Health Dallas campus. An appointment is required. Call 1-877-THR-WELL to make an appointment for a 15- to 30-minute session.

Additional Texas Health Resources Car Seat Fitting Stations are located in Allen, Azle, Cleburne, Denton, Fort Worth, Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Kaufman, Plano, Southwest Fort Worth and Stephenville. Call for more information.
